· Start by visiting various modelling agencies. Keep a notebook handy with questions and collect the answers you get from each agency. If you are under 20 years of age go along with a parent or older friend who might by the virtue of being older might ask questions you would not think of. Compare the agencies and decide which one suits you. Sometimes you might not fit the image the agency is looking for so the choice is not always yours.

· Hang around hunting grounds where you might be spotted by a top agency. Oxford Circus is the favourite place for model scouts who are looking for fresh faces. Preferably hang around Top Shop which is popular among fashion conscious teenagers.

.Take your time and invest some money on a professional portfolio. Eventually you can compile your best shots. · Learn about photography and try and find a photographer you are at ease with. A photographer who understands you and knows how to bring out the best in you.

· Attend events like Salon International the hairdressing extravaganza. It will provide you with lots of ideas in terms of hair styles, styling and beauty trends.

· Decide which make-up works for you. Go to any of the major department stores and visit the make-up counters to get advice. Experimenting with different brands shades, colours will help you decide which make-up line is suited to your skin type and brings out the best in you.

· Get creative and develop your own unique style of dressing. As a future model you should enjoy dressing up, shopping and experimenting with different fashion styles.

· Make yourself stand out. Think of ways of making yourself stand out from the crowd. The actress Halle Berry revealed in an interview that when she cut her hair into a short pixie style she started getting more work. Berry found that her hair cut gave her more personality. This is a good example of how you can create an image for yourself.

· When you visit agencies ask questions and listen to the answers very carefully. Try and listen more than you speak. You will learn more about the modelling industry by being an observer.

· Keep up with all the write-ups on modelling in the newspapers, magazines, etc. You will be amazed as to how much you can learn about the industry.

· If you actually manage to get an agency interested in you don’t sign the contract without reading the fine print. Don’t be pressured to sign in a hurry. If in doubt seek legal advice.
